Set Up Google Shopping for Shopify — Step by Step Guide

Google Shopping puts your products in front of buyers actively searching to purchase. With Shopify’s Google integration, you can get your products listed in Google Shopping in under an hour. Here’s the complete setup guide.

What is Google Shopping?

Google Shopping shows product listings (image, price, store name) directly in Google search results when users search for products to buy. These appear above regular search results and can drive high-converting traffic since buyers are already in purchase mode.

Prerequisites

  • A Google account
  • A Google Merchant Center account (free)
  • Google Ads account (even with $0 budget — for free listings)
  • Your store with accurate product data

Step 1: Install the Google and YouTube App

In Shopify App Store, install the official “Google and YouTube” app. This connects your Shopify store to Google Merchant Center automatically and syncs your product catalog as a feed.

Step 2: Set Up Google Merchant Center

Follow the onboarding in the Google app. It will:

  1. Create or connect your Google Merchant Center account
  2. Verify your website domain
  3. Set up automatic product feed sync
  4. Configure shipping settings

Step 3: Fix Common Feed Errors

In Google Merchant Center → Products → Diagnostics, look for and fix:

  • Missing GTIN/barcode — add barcodes to your Shopify products or claim exemption for custom products
  • Price mismatch — ensure Shopify prices match what’s on your product page exactly
  • Shipping not configured — set up shipping in Google Merchant Center matching your Shopify rates
  • Image too small — product images must be at least 100x100px (500×500 recommended)

Step 4: Enable Free Google Shopping Listings

Google offers free product listings in the Shopping tab and Google Images. In Merchant Center, go to Growth → Manage programs → Free product listings and enable it. Your products can appear here at no cost.

Step 5: Run Google Shopping Ads (Optional)

For paid visibility in main search results, connect your Google Ads account and create a Shopping campaign. Start with Performance Max campaigns for beginners — they automatically optimise across Google Search, Shopping, Display, and YouTube.
