Shipping is often the biggest operational cost for Shopify stores. Getting your shipping setup right can save hundreds per month and reduce cart abandonment from shipping cost surprises. Here’s how to optimize it.
Shopify Shipping — What’s Included
Shopify Payments users get access to Shopify Shipping, which provides discounted rates from USPS, UPS, DHL, and Canada Post. Discounts can be up to 88% off retail rates. This is available on all Shopify plans in US, Canada, and Australia.
Set Up Shipping Zones and Rates
In Settings → Shipping and delivery → Create shipping zone:
- Add countries/regions to the zone
- Set rate conditions: flat rate, free, weight-based, or price-based
- For premium service, add a separate “Express” zone with higher rates
Calculate Real-Time Carrier Rates
Shopify can show customers actual carrier rates (USPS, FedEx, UPS) at checkout instead of flat rates. Enable carrier-calculated shipping in Settings → Shipping. This ensures you collect the exact amount you’ll spend on shipping.
Free Shipping Threshold
Free shipping above a threshold is the most effective AOV booster in e-commerce. Set a threshold that covers your average shipping cost:
- If your average order is $40 and shipping costs $5, set free shipping at $50
- Show progress in the cart: “You’re $10 away from free shipping”
Apps like Cart Upsell show this progress bar automatically.
Third-Party Shipping Apps
For better rates and features beyond Shopify Shipping:
- ShipStation — multi-carrier, batch label printing, automation rules
- Pirateship — cheapest USPS rates, extremely simple
- EasyPost — developer-friendly multi-carrier API
- ShipBob — outsource fulfillment entirely to their warehouse network
International Shipping Setup
- Use DHL or FedEx for international (most reliable)
- Display accurate international rates using carrier-calculated rates
- Offer Delivered Duty Paid (DDP) to prevent surprise customs charges for customers
- Use Shopify’s Customs forms feature to pre-fill international shipping documentation
