Print-on-demand (POD) lets you sell custom-designed products — t-shirts, hoodies, mugs, prints — without holding any inventory. Orders are printed and shipped by your POD partner. Printful is the most popular POD provider for Shopify. Here’s how to start.
How Print-on-Demand Works
- You create designs
- You connect Printful to your Shopify store
- You publish products with your designs applied
- A customer orders on your Shopify store
- Printful automatically receives the order, prints it, and ships to your customer
- You keep the profit margin
Step 1: Create a Printful Account
Go to printful.com and create a free account. Printful has no monthly fee — you pay only for products when orders come in.
Step 2: Connect Printful to Shopify
In Printful dashboard, go to Stores → Add store → Shopify. Authorize the connection. Printful installs in your Shopify store and can push products directly to your catalog.
Step 3: Create Your Designs
You need print-ready design files:
- PNG format with transparent background
- At least 150 DPI at print size (300 DPI recommended)
- Respect the print area dimensions for each product
Design tools: Canva Pro, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, or Printful’s built-in Design Maker.
Step 4: Create Products in Printful
In Printful, go to Products and select an item (e.g. Bella+Canvas 3001 t-shirt). Use the Design Maker to place your design on the product mockup. Set up sizes, colors, and generate the mockup images that appear on your Shopify store.
Step 5: Set Your Selling Prices
Printful shows you the base cost. Set your retail price to make a profitable margin. For most apparel:
- POD cost: $12-20
- Recommended retail: $30-45
- Margin: $10-25 per item
Niche Down for Better Results
Generic “custom t-shirts” shops compete with thousands of others. Find a specific niche:
- Dog breed owners (Labrador lover gifts)
- Profession-specific (nurse gifts, teacher gifts)
- Hobby communities (hiking, gaming, cycling)
- Local pride (state or city merchandise)
