Collection pages are often the most underoptimized pages on Shopify stores. They rank for broad category keywords (“women’s running shoes”, “organic skincare”) that drive massive traffic. Here’s how to optimize them.
Why Collection Pages Matter for SEO
Product pages rank for specific product queries (“Nike Air Max 270”). Collection pages rank for broader category queries that have higher search volumes and capture shoppers at the research phase — often before they’ve decided exactly what they want.
1. Write a Unique Collection Description
Most Shopify stores leave collection descriptions blank. Add 150-300 words that:
- Include your target keyword naturally in the first paragraph
- Describe what types of products are in the collection
- Include buying guide information (what to look for)
- Mention specific brands or materials (long-tail keyword coverage)
Don’t stuff keywords — write for humans first.
2. Optimise the Collection Title and URL
The collection title is the H1. Include your primary keyword:
- Good: “Women’s Running Shoes” or “Organic Face Moisturisers”
- Bad: “Running Collection” or “Moisturisers”
The URL slug should match: /collections/womens-running-shoes
3. Set a Strong Meta Title and Description
In Shopify’s collection editor, scroll to “Search engine listing preview” and set:
- Meta title: “[Collection Name] | [Brand Name]” — 50-60 chars
- Meta description: Include keyword, note number of products, and a compelling reason to visit
4. Add Internal Links Within Your Collection Description
Link to related collections and top product pages from within your collection description. This distributes PageRank through your site and helps users navigate.
5. Enable Faceted Navigation Carefully
Collection filters (by size, color, price) create URLs like /collections/shoes?color=red. These can create duplicate content issues. Use noindex on filter URL combinations, or use Shopify’s filter feature which handles canonicals automatically.
6. Image Optimization on Collection Pages
Collection pages show many product images. Make sure:
- All product images have descriptive alt text
- Images are properly sized (don’t use 2000px images for 300px thumbnails)
- Lazy loading is enabled for images below the fold
