Shopify Analytics: How to Read Your Store Data and Make Better Decisions

Shopify Analytics gives you a wealth of data about your store’s performance. Knowing which reports to look at and what they mean is what separates growing stores from stagnant ones. Here’s how to interpret your data.

The Most Important Shopify Metrics

  • Total sales: Revenue after discounts, before refunds
  • Conversion rate: % of sessions that result in a purchase (industry average: 1-3%)
  • Average order value (AOV): Revenue / number of orders
  • Customer lifetime value (CLV): Average total spend per customer over their relationship with you
  • Return customer rate: % of orders from customers who have ordered before

Where to Find Key Reports

In Shopify Admin → Analytics:

  • Overview dashboard: Your most important metrics at a glance
  • Finances → Sales: Revenue breakdown by product, traffic source, etc.
  • Customers: New vs returning customers, geography, top customers
  • Marketing: Which traffic sources bring the most revenue
  • Product: Best-selling products, sell-through rate, inventory analytics

Conversion Rate Analysis

Your overall conversion rate is an average across all traffic sources. Break it down:

  • Direct traffic converts at 2-4%
  • Email converts at 3-5%
  • Paid social converts at 0.5-1.5%
  • Organic search converts at 1-3%

If email converts at 1% when it should be 3%, your emails or landing pages need work.

Set Up Google Analytics 4

Shopify Analytics is good, but GA4 gives you more depth:

  • Funnel analysis (where customers drop off before purchase)
  • Cohort analysis (do January customers buy again in March?)
  • Multi-touch attribution (which channels assisted conversions)

Connect GA4 via the Google and YouTube Shopify app.

A/B Testing With Analytics

Use your data to form hypotheses for A/B tests:

  • High product page views but low add-to-cart → test product description, images, or price
  • High add-to-cart but low checkout → test cart page layout, shipping thresholds
  • High checkout starts but low completions → test checkout page, payment options
