You don’t need to know HTML or CSS to customize a Shopify theme. The theme editor is a powerful drag-and-drop tool that covers most customization needs. Here’s what you can do without writing a single line of code.
The Shopify Theme Editor
Go to Online Store → Themes → Customize to open the theme editor. You’ll see your live store on the left and a customization panel on the right. Changes are previewed in real time.
Sections and Blocks
Modern Shopify themes use Sections (large content areas like hero images, product grids) and Blocks (smaller elements within sections like text, buttons, images). You can:
- Add, remove, and reorder sections
- Drag blocks within sections
- Configure each block’s content and settings
Typography and Colors
In the theme editor, go to Theme settings (usually a gear icon at the bottom of the left panel). Here you can change:
- Fonts (choose from Google Fonts or your theme’s built-in options)
- Brand colors (primary, secondary, background, text)
- Button styles (rounded, sharp, outlined)
Homepage Customization
The homepage is the most customizable page. You can typically add:
- Hero slideshow or banner
- Featured collections grid
- Featured product section
- Rich text sections with your brand story
- Testimonials or review sections
- Newsletter signup
- Logo list (for “As featured in” press logos)
Product Page Customization
On the product page template, you can add blocks for:
- Custom text (ingredient lists, care instructions, size guides)
- Collapsible tabs for extra information
- Stock level indicator
- Product reviews widget (requires a reviews app)
When You Need a Developer
Some customizations require code:
- Custom checkout fields
- Complex navigation menus
- Custom filters on collection pages
- Third-party integrations not covered by apps
